The Citadel of Brouage
The Citadel of Brouage

400 years of history
Founded around 1555 by Jacques de Pons, on the deposit of the ballast left by the ships frequenting the Gulf of Saintonge for more than 1000 years.
Jacopolis sur Brouage was, above all, intended to be a place of commerce. Babel, where all languages were spoken, rich and prosperous, the city became such a strategic issue that Protestants and Catholics fought over it until the King himself decided to incorporate it into his own domain.

he Corderie Royale of Rochefort – A rope making factory
he Corderie Royale of Rochefort – A rope making factory

The Corderie Royale : royal rope making factory right next to the Charente river
Just a minute away from the frigate Hermione, discover the "Versailles of the sea" : the Corderie Royale ! Longer than the Eiffel tower is high, this royal manufacture illustrates by its architecture, the greatness and power of Louis XIV in the 17th century.
The Corderie Royale, built between 1666 and 1669, provided ropes for the French Navy and its ships for over three centuries. First industrial building in Rochefort, it will not withstand the appearance of steel cables and in 1862, the production of rope is ceased. Reassigned to many uses, it will definitely close its doors at the same time as the closing of the Naval Dockyard of Rochefort in 1927.
Abandoned, forgotten in this military space forbidden to the public, the Corderie Royale was first set on fire in 1944 by the German troops... Without the help of Admiral Dupont, which made it a classified Historic Monument, it could have been destroyed!

L'Hermione, the frigate of freedom
L'Hermione, the frigate of freedom

In 1780, the Marquis de La Fayette sailed on the Hermione - a frigate built in the Naval Dockyard of Rochefort a few months earlier - to help the American rebels in their fight for independence. In 1997, a new adventure began in Rochefort. Work on building a replica of the Hermione had begun at the old maritime dockyard, on the same site as the original construction. The shipyard is open everyday, and is a great way to discover how craftsmen such as carpenters, blacksmiths, etc. worked in the 18th century. After 17 years of effort, hundreds of thousands of hours of work, the frigate Hermione is now the largest replica of an old ship ever rebuilt in France.
